The Five Love Languages Series: Acts of Service

A Mocha For Your Tuesday

Aug 29, 2017

I’m really excited about this week’s Mocha because Acts of Service is one of my primary love languages! (Thankfully Joel has a servant’s heart because he gets to use it often!) Acts of service is just like it sounds. It means going above and beyond to do things that serve each other, particularly when it comes to mundane responsibilities.

Side note: this works so great for the love languages in our own marriage! One of my primary languages is acts of service, and Joel’s is words of affirmation. So Joel washes the dishes and folds laundry for me, and I tell him thank you and how much I appreciate him doing those things for me.

Boom. See the beautiful things that happen when you understand how to love each other well? :)

People with this love language can often feel a little empty when their spouse doesn’t make the effort to help with any of the mundane responsibilities. It’s not that they’re lazy or don’t want to do the work, but it’s emotionally draining in a relationship.

When someone goes out of their way to genuinely help me without expecting something in return – whether it’s Joel randomly volunteering to vacuum the house or a stranger offering to take my empty coffee cup up to the counter for me – I feel overwhelmed with gratitude.

If your spouse is complaining about how much housework needs to be done or about your habit of leaving wet towels on the bathroom floor, it might be an empty “acts of service” love tank.

A note to those of us with Acts of Service love languages: don’t use it as a weapon to coerce your spouse into doing things for you. That’s not healthy and will pretty quickly take out all the joy out of serving us.

What is one routine thing you can do for your spouse this week? Unload the dishwasher one night? Offer to stop by the grocery store on the way home? Have dinner ready and waiting when he comes home from work?

Here’s to building strong marriages!

*hugs*
