“What should I wear to my engagement shoot?!”

We get asked that question a lot. Most of us girls love to find any occasion to dress up. We bring out our favorite high heels and dig out that amazing lipstick saved for special occasions only. You’ve only been through your closet fifty million times, trying to piece together the perfect outfit. But what looks best in pictures? Even your fiance is asking what he should wear.

If you follow a few simple guidelines, you can help create engagement pictures that look every bit as dreamy as you’ve always hoped!

  • Find an outfit that represents who you are. If you are a fun and whimsical kind of person, let your personality show! Bow-ties, aviators, a tutu, you name it! If you love to be classy and elegant, try an amazing dress paired with your favorite heels. If you’re country all the way, break out the cowboy boots – and maybe even a cowboy hat! You want to feel like yourself in the pictures!

  • Both of you should dress in a similar style. When you look at a picture, your mind becomes confused when it sees one in jeans and sneakers, while the other sports a sequined gown and diamonds. You become distracted by the disconnect and lose the emotion of the moment captured. Whatever level of casualness you are going for, make sure you match!

  • It is best to wear coordinating colors that complement each other. Complementing, not matching! You don’t want to try to wear the exact same color. Chances are, they won’t be exact. Find a color palette that you like – it will give you a great idea of what colors go really well together. If you Google “color palette”, there will be hundreds of ideas for you to work with!

  • Think about wearing an accessory that matches your fiance’s outfit. A scarf or necklace with a matching color can really tie the outfits together.

  • Be really careful with patterns, especially if both of you are wearing them. Patterns are not always bad; they just need to be used properly. When the patterns clash or are too distracting, it can take the focus away from your face. Typically when one of you wears stripes, the other will want something solid.

  • The style of clothing you choose affects the overall look of your engagement pictures. If you’re dressed in pearls and lace with cute pink pants, your pictures will have a more delicate, vintage feel. If you’re sporting the cowboy boots and jeans, your pictures will look country and casual. Decide what type of look you want for your pictures and try to find an outfit that enhances that look. You can keep natural hues or add a fun pop of color.

  • Every girl has many features that are beautiful, but we sometimes have a few things we want to minimize. If you’re wearing a strapless shirt, you’ll want to be sure you don’t have bulges around your arms as a result. Things like three-quarter length sleeves and just above the knee length skirts are very flattering on almost everybody. Find the outfit that flatters you the best!

  • Consider matching your outfit with the season. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it can add a wonderful, coordinated look to your pictures. Wearing a sweater and scarf looks much more believable as you’re nestled among the golden fall leaves than a tank top and shorts. (Unless you live in the south, then sometimes it just makes sense!) Spring flowers are beautiful with light, airy colors. Deep, dark hues complement winter’s natural look. Summer invites fun, playful colors.

  • Be comfortable! The best pictures are when you are just enjoying the moment with each other- talking, laughing, spontaneously kissing. If your clothes are restrictive or you are constantly worrying that something in your outfit will go amiss, you won’t be able to live in the moment.

  • Consider professional hair and makeup before your engagement shoot. These are pictures you will cherish the rest of your life, and you want to look your best! It can help you feel even more confident and beautiful. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for both you and your makeup artist and hair stylist to get to know each other before the wedding! (Need suggestions on who to use? Your photographer can help with recommendations on great professionals they’ve worked with before!)
  • Guys: What you wear is important, too! Find a style that fits your personality, but also make sure it will look stellar when your kids are looking through your engagement album. Consider a style like jeans with a sport coat, a nice dress shirt with your khakis, or pull out something fun like suspenders and a bow-tie!

The most important thing is that, no matter what you wear, you feel beautiful and confident. These are your engagement pictures, ones that you will treasure your whole life! We hope this helps you brides feel more confident about your attire going into your session!
