The Attitude

One evening, I felt a grumpy mood take over. Everything was annoying me. I had negative attitude on every topic Joel and I discussed.

As I saw the frustration grow on Joel’s face, I suddenly realized how my actions were affecting him.

My patient, steady, optimistic husband was becoming quieter and quieter. When I accused him of not wanting to talk, he didn’t have much to say. Can you guess how I reacted to that?

I saw that his countenance had closed. I saw that we were no longer on the same page. It was like watching one of those Avenger force fields come up between us.

In that moment, I saw what happened. I saw how I had beaten down our camaraderie with my negative attitude.

I saw how my nagging words and complaints were like little daggers in his desire for being positive and realistic.

And the scary part? I realized I didn’t seriously mean half the things I was saying.

I stopped. I closed down my laptop for the night and found some space to pull myself back together. Quiet time was definitely in order to consider what was happening.

Do you sometimes let a negative attitude seep in? Do you let unfiltered words come out that you really don’t even mean?

Get yourself back together.

When you do, just stop.

Acknowledge what you’re doing and find some space to do a little attitude adjustment. Think about what you’re doing and how it affects other people. Don’t take it out on your spouse!

He needed to tune me out. It’s a sobering thought when you realize that someone needs to ignore your words for their own good. Our words have meaning, even when they’re careless.

How can you guard against letting unfiltered talk bring other people down?
