The Secret To A Happy Marriage {Building Marriage}

A Mocha For Your Tuesday

Aug 16, 2016

There was a survey done a couple years ago that I happened to stumble across one day. It asked married couples to share their secret to a happy marriage.

The results were fascinating. And the number one thing on the list?

Talking.

Really, truly taking the time to talk with each other. Not just a “How was your day?”, but conversations that went deeper than the activities of the day.

I think there’s something to be said for this. We’ve seen this in our own relationship. Communicating is one of the most important things in a marriage. For any relationship, really, but especially in marriage.

Talk to each other about how you really feel. Tell each other about your thoughts, your dreams, your frustrations. Be open with your struggles. Talk about the things that mean the most to you.

You can’t expect your spouse to understand without clearly expressing your thoughts.

Notice the word clearly. :) As much as us girls think our guys should be able to interpret our meaning through our actions, it’s not as easy for them as we think.

On the other side of this, it’s important to really and truly listen. Listen with an open mind. Don’t jump in with presuppositions. Don’t get defensive. Don’t assume you know what they mean until you’ve listened.

Learn to talk about everything in a safe and beneficial way. Remember, you’re on the same team!

*hugs*
