If your guy is like most grooms, sometimes it takes a little convincing to get him on board with the whole “pictures taking thing”. Girls love to get dressed up and smile for the camera, but most guys don’t put it on the top of their favorite date-night activities list.
We’re here to help. :) Know that you’re not alone in your mission to get your guy on board with the idea of being in front of the camera. Here are some tips for making it fun for you both!
1. Find a photographer that he enjoys being around. This is one reason why we encourage both the bride and groom to come to initial client meetings whenever possible! When he knows who’s going to be on the other side of the camera and knows that he likes them already, it’s a little easier to convince him that he’s going to enjoy your engagement session.
2. Before your engagement session (or wedding), sit down and show him two or three of your favorite sessions on your photographer’s blog. Knowing what to expect can do a lot to make him feel comfortable and confident!
3. Give yourself extra time to get ready and get to your session location. You don’t want to start off on the wrong foot by making him wait as you finish your makeup. You also don’t want to be stressed and cranky in the car if you’re running late! If you show up a few minutes early, enjoy a few quiet moments together!
4. Involve him in the process of choosing the location and any props you might bring. Caring about what he wants can go a long way! Giving him the chance to add his personality to the session makes it much more interesting for him. :)
5. Let him know that you acknowledge and respect his feelings. Tell him how important this is to you and why you don’t want to share this experience with anyone but him! It’s part of your love story that you’ll both cherish for years to come, and he’s the most important part for you!
A lot of our grooms come to the engagement session not super excited. Fair enough. :) One of the best parts of the engagement session (or wedding day!) for us is when the groom tells us afterward, “That was actually really awesome. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but I had fun!”
That is music to our ears. And to yours. :)
