Why I Always Look for the Latte Art and Why We Want To Bring Swans Into Our Wedding Photography

Life with Joel & Amber

How did you know I would write a personal blog post about coffee?

Just a wild guess, you say. ;)

In case you haven’t been following our journey for very long, there’s something important you should know. We love coffee. We also love to travel. I mean, really love to travel. And really, really love epic coffee.

While we travel, we’re also huge on scouting out epic local coffee shops everywhere we go. I think that’s at least 32% of our passion for traveling. But that’s a topic for another day.

One of the criteria I’ve noticed myself using when we’re looking for a coffee shop to add to our #jacoffeeadventures is their mastery of latte art.

Why?

In the coffee shops we’ve visited around the world, we’ve rarely had a “#jacoffeefavorites” coffee that didn’t have incredible latte art.

(You can read about how our coffee adventure started HERE and the story behind our Instagram coffee hashtags HERE!)

As I was trying {mostly unsuccessfully} to make one of those latte art hearts on my rose vanilla latte this morning, I thought about how much practice it takes to be able to create any kind of latte art. Much less that amazing stuff I see filling up my Instagram feed.

(I follow waaaay too many coffee people on Instagram. No wonder I’m always craving one!)

To be able to create exemplary latte art, it takes tons of practice. Patience. Dedication.

Those people who can create epic latte art are usually the ones totally passionate about their craft. Coffee is more than just a job for them. It’s a passion and a lifestyle.

I think that’s why I always look for the latte art. What I’m really searching for is the passion and the craft. The heart that goes into making every single cup of coffee.

As I brought my delicious but not beautiful latte back to my laptop, I started thinking about my own craft.

Photographs are similar, in a way.

To take amazing, consistent, latte-art worthy photographs is not just a job. It’s not just a swirl of foam that sits on top.

It’s a craft and an art.

And just like those baristas, it takes so much passion. Practice. More practice. Really pouring your heart into the art that you bring into the world.

I love the art that we create now, but what if we can turn that latte art photography into something even more beautiful – like those amazing swans those latte art championship contenders can make!

How do people with a passion do that?

They take the time to learn, to practice, to embrace taking a journey beyond the heart to find the swan. There’s a new world of art that is waiting for those who find that path.

This season, we decided to pour our hearts into trying to discover the swans of photography.

We wake up every morning with a prayer that what we do today will serve and encourage our couples well. That the decisions we make and how we spend our time will result in making their lives richer far beyond the pictures from our camera. By practicing and perfecting our craft, we’re creating an even more beautiful version of their legacy for them to leave.

We believe that you never stop learning. Art can be refined and rediscovered, a passion rekindled and a world opened.

Here’s to following that swan!

What passion do you want to follow this year? What do you want to dive deeper into? Tell us in the comments below so we can cheer you on!! :)
