With the rise of creative sites like Pinterest and Etsy, the DIY phenomenon is more popular than ever. Whether you’re looking to save some money by doing it yourself or aspiring to add items of sentimental value to your wedding, there are endless opportunities to add a DIY touch to your wedding. Many brides are including at least one DIY project to their weddings, regardless of budget.
As wonderful as DIY projects are, it’s important to go into them with a realistic understanding of the commitment. Today on the J&A Blog, we’re sharing 4 tips that will help you create a smooth DIY experience for your wedding!
1. Give yourself an early deadline. If you’re going to DIY anything, give yourself a non-negotiable deadline at least two weeks before the wedding. Things always take long than you imagine, and the last thing you want is to be stressing to get things done in time! You will want plenty of cushion time in case your project takes longer than you anticipated! Which is usually does. :)
2. Enlist the help of family and friends! Have a DIY party with your bridesmaids or closest friends. Bring out some party food, put on one of your favorite romantic chick flicks – and knock out some projects!
3. Calculate the cost of supplies before you commit. If you’re on a budget, this is important. A lot of times, your DIY projects will end up costing as much, if not more, than it would be to simply purchase something similar! Don’t forget about things like shipping for your supplies, glue, extra supplies in case of mess ups, etc. Remember that this is also a huge time investment for you. If your time is limited, ask yourself if you’re better off spending free time making wedding favors or enjoying quality time with your fiancé.
4. Know when it’s time to adjust your plan. Sometimes, no matter how good your intentions are, you just didn’t get around to doing it. Or maybe you started and realized that it was going to take way more than you expected. Don’t be afraid to step back for a minute and decide whether it’s worth doing. Stressing out the week before your wedding to hand-tie your wedding programs or paint the table signs won’t necessarily be the way you want to remember those special days. It’s okay to have your friend and family help you come up with a Plan B. The memories of this special time in your life are too precious to spend completely stressed out. :)
