How To Cut A Wedding Cake

Tidbits

Jan 17, 2014

The moment comes for every bride and groom. The coordinator calls you away from the dance floor, still giggling over cousin Nathan’s antics during oppa gangnam. It’s time to cut the cake. You walk over to the towering mass of deliciousness and look up. Panic. All eyes are on you and you blank out. This is definitely not the 9×13 pan of red velvet cake you made for your Mom’s birthday last year. How do you even cut this thing?

We run into this moment at almost every wedding we shoot. The Look of Panic at the cake table. Not many of us brides think about things like how to cut the cake before now. So we’re going to give you some quick tips to prepare you brides for the moment. No moment of panic for you!

1. Holding The Knife

First, the bride picks up the knife. The groom places his hand on top of hers. Or vice versa. This first tip might seem pretty basic, but The Look of Panic often pushes rational thinking to the side for just that moment. It doesn’t really matter how you do it, but most couples like to slice it together.

2. Cutting The Cake

Wedding cakes typically have one of two basic shapes. The first has a round base. On the bottom layer of cake, make one cut all the way down. Make another cut about 2 inches away. Now you have two parallel cuts.

Point the tip of the knife downward and make a horizontal cut toward the back of the slice of cake.

Using either a cake server or your ninja balancing skills, slide the slice of cake onto a plate that has hopefully been provided for this moment.

The second type of shape has a square base. These are super easy to cut. The best way is to make two little cuts right around the corner. This cuts the corner off and eliminates the need for your ninja skills.

P.S. It’s really helpful to take off that little ribbon before trying to slice.

3. Feeding Each Other the Morsel of Deliciousness

Whether or not you’re nice to each other or engage in the epic cake smash, you’ll want to use your knife to cut the slice of cake into at least two pieces. Girls, I suggest grabbing the one with the most frosting before your sweet groom has the chance to grab it and smash! Maybe the reason a lot of wedding cakes have white frosting??
